Golfing in Cayman

Due largely to the Cayman Islands’ yearlong summery climate, ideal for golfing, and the world-class facilities that are available to players, golf is a popular activity for residents and visitors alike.

There are two golf courses on-Island, a nine-hole and an eighteen-hole. At both you can rent equipment, improve your swing with a lesson from the resident pro and take advantage of cheaper twilight rates. Water features and trade winds present exciting challenges for players of all skill sets on the respective courses and it’s not unusual to share your teeing ground with a sunbathing iguana! Various package rates and memberships are available to residents and visitors, and there are also deals which extend to family members.

North Sound Club

The only 18-hole course in Grand Cayman, North Sound Golf Club offers challenging play, stunning ocean views, and impeccable greens for golfers of all levels. It’s a must play for any golfer, novice or advanced! Open 7 days a week with a full service practice facility, aqua driving range and open air bar.

The course

With expansive fairways and greens, our par 71 course has a championship rating of 73.1 and features 5 sets of tee boxes for all ages and abilities. Our signature par 3 11th hole is known for it’s length and stunning ocean backdrop. Dotted throughout with lush palm trees, the course is often visited by iguanas and colorful birds.

1 Gimmee PAR 3 / 130 YARDS

This is a straight away short par 3 to start the round. Usually down wind, short of the hole is much better than above the hole for a realistic birdie putt.

2 Westward PAR 5 / 565 YARDS

A straight forward par 5 – 565 yards, this is a three shot hole with a short water carry off the tee and out of bounds all the way down the left-hand side. The green is divided in half with a distinct ridge running across the center.

3 Mahoe PAR 4 / 420 YARDS

This is a cleverly designed dogleg right par 4 with a pond at the dogleg. You want to be sure to stay down the left side of the fairway as a prevailing wind blows you toward the pond.

4 Lakeside PAR 4 / 405 YARDS

This par 4 is considered to be the most challenging hole on the outward 9. Out-of-bounds left and a pond right captures wayward tee shots. Don’t let the 405 yards fool you as this hole plays far longer. Players should opt for the left side off the tee in order to shorten the hole into the wind.

5 Norther PAR 3 / 180 YARDS

Scenic par 3 over a large pond. Pay close attention to the wind, usually right to left and into. Take one more club than you think to allow for the wind and to clear the water. Anywhere on this green in regulation is a success.

6 Big Bend PAR 5 / 525 YARDS

The par 5 6th features a true risk-reward scenario with a 90 degree dogleg 210 yards from the tee. Decide whether to cut the corner or find a way through the trees and you’ll then be greeted by a 200 to 220 yard shot into the wind to reach the green in two.

7 Tabebuia PAR 4 /355 YARDS

Straight away hole par 4, 355 yards. The second shot is interesting with a quartering wind and water short and right and water long and left.

8 Mo PAR 4 / 380 YARDS

Here you’ll have to decide whether or not to challenge a pond located 100 yards from the green. A lay-up off the tee offers a longer shot into this par 4, but avoids the lake. Take care to play this large green at the right distance as it is quite deep.

9 Small Island PAR 3 / 155 YARDS

A great par 3 155 yards to finish the nine, generally the hole plays into the trade winds and can add an extra two or three clubs. Just to add a little more challenge, there is water short and left of the green.

10 Sandy PAR 4 / 335 YARDS

Finally a little breather, straight away short par 4 335. Just hit a little draw off the fairway bunkers and you will have a short iron to a green that slopes back to front.

11 Sound PAR 3 / 205 YARDS

This is our signature hole and it plays back toward the North Sound and Rum Point. The wind feels the strongest here and is usually in your face. Don’t be embarrassed to hit a driver –lots of us do.

12 Pines PAR 5 / 540 YARDS

This downwind par 5 features two mounds on both sides of the fairway to funnel slightly wayward tee shots. Longer hitters can reach in two, but 3 shots are more likely. Aim for a layup to 100 yards to help set up a potential birdie putt.

13 Carry PAR 3 / 205 YARDS

A par 3 with a pond just short, again this is down wind and can play two clubs shorter, you are best to play for the front of the green as the chip from the back is more difficult.

14 Sunset PAR 4 / 405 YARDS

Straight away down wind par 4. Favor the left side with out-of-bounds all down the right side, but a good drive rewards you with a mid to short iron to a moderately sized green.

15 Mitchell PAR 4 / 335 YARDS

Your last down wind hole par 4 335 yards, there is no reward for a big tee shot as the fairway left runs away into a pond by the green. Any shot that carries the water in front of the tee will leave no more than a 150 yard shot. The green has two distinct putting surfaces left and right.

16 Royal Palm PAR 4 / 335 YARDS

This short par 4 plays back toward the clubhouse, and is one of the few holes without a bail out. The #1 handicapped hole has OB to the right and a massive pond to the left. Find the fairway off the tee for a mid to short shot to a two-tiered green.

17 Devious PAR 4 / 295 YARDS

A deceptive hole par 4 295 yards, the tee shot is straight away and you should try to leave a shot inside 150 yards. For your second shot, the green runs parallel to the fairway and is very narrow but deep. This creates the need for precise shot with bunkers left and right.

18 Waterloo PAR 5 / 525 YARDS

A 3-shot par 5 for most, this hole requires a straight drive. Where the hole doglegs around the lake towards the clubhouse, you’ll need to decide how much corner to take on. The green is elevated; aim to play to 100 yards.

The The Ritz-Carlton Golf Course

Designed by Greg Norman, the nine-hole course at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Grand Cayman offers challenging play amid breathtaking natural beauty. The course was designed in a way to make its 470-yard-hole play feel like 600, and is perfect for those who want to play one or multiple rounds in a day. The resort Golf Club also offers a pro shop, tournament conditioning, customized instruction and equipment rental.

The course

Hole 1

Medium length Par 4 with water down the right. The favorable target line is the left side of the fairway for the best angle to the green. This hole typically plays into the wind, which could add 2 to 3 clubs on to your second shot.

Hole 2

558 yard Par 5 playing directly into the wind. Water runs down the entire right side and your drive will need to contend with the fairway bunkers on the left. The best play is to lay up to your favorite yardage for your third shot. Accuracy on your approach to the long and narrow green is a must.

Hole 3

Medium length dogleg left Par 4 with water down the entire left side. The winds will typically blow your ball to the right, which is well protected by fairway bunkers.

Hole 4

205 yard Par 3 over water. This hole typically plays downwind and long and left of the green is well-bunkered. Three palm trees guard the right side of the green.

Hole 5

Short Par 4 with water down the left side. Your tee shot will need to favor the right side of the fairway for the best angle into this small green.

Hole 6

Short Par 4 that gives golfers the best option for birdie. Errant tee shots to the right will find the fairway bunker and if you go for the green, beware of the water hazard that comes into play short and left of the green.

Hole 7

601 yard Par 5 that typically plays downwind. Beware of the massive fairway bunker on the left that will catch a lot of balls from players avoiding the water down the right-hand side. The two-tiered green is receptive to a bump-and-run style shot, but avoid the left side of the green and the large collection area.

Hole 8

Medium length Par 4 with mangrove down the entire left side. The right side of the fairway is well-guarded with fairway bunkers.

Hole 9

Island green Par 3 playing 156 yards from the Championship Tees. Winds on this hole will typically be hurting and from left-to-right. Club selection will be key here as the hole location on this huge green can vary your club selection by 4 or 5 clubs.
